Black History

Our Modern Prima Ballerina

Having just retired, Misty Copeland has achieved recognition through her diligent and graceful stage presence, albeit beginning her studies at thirteen (late for ballet dancers). She danced with the American Ballet Theatre for most of her career, known as a standout in both her solo and principal (the first Black woman in that role) careers there.

In her career with the ABT as well as other roles, Copeland has sought to use her role as a Black dancer in a field without much representation to elevate the presence and work of other Black dancers and performers.
