Recent Kennedy Center honoree (2017) Carmen de Lavallade brought Creole culture, graceful movement, and strong collaborations into her work. An artist of many forms, she also worked alongside her husband Geoffrey Holder (pictured with her below) to develop her solo dance.

Beyond performance and choreography, de Lavallade also taught for several years. She danced and acted on several stages and in films.

Of her early years training with Lester Horton, she stated, “The people that came out of it, we were always very creative people. We weren’t just in a room with a barre and a mirror.”
